“Moldova: The Growing Pains of Democracy”
The US Helsinki Commission will organize a briefing in Washington, D.C. to discuss about the political stalemate from Moldova and the recent developments in Transnistria. “Moldova: The Growing Pains of Democracy” is the topic of the briefing which will be held on January 31, 2012.
Among the questions which will be discussed are the following: Is Moldova’s political deadlock proof that the democratic process is working or evidence of a failing system? Is Russia losing the ability to impose its own flagging brand of “sovereign democracy” in nearby separatist enclaves? What can the United States do to encourage Moldova’s slow, but steady progress toward greater implementation of Helsinki commitments?
Igor Munteanu, the Ambassador of Moldova to the United States is one of the guests who will participate. Among speakers are also William Hill, Professor of National Security Strategy at the National War College and former Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova, and Matthew Rojansky, who is a Deputy Director of the Russia and Eurasia Program at the Carnegie Endowment.
