Moldova schedules presidential election for 10 November
The Moldovan parliament will try to elect the head of state in a week's time. The date of the presidential election, 10 November, was set by MPs several hours ago. The decision was supported by the 53-strong ruling Alliance for European Integration, while the opposition Communist Party did not participate in the vote.
If the first attempt to elect the president fails, a repeat election will be held in a month's time, on 10 December.
The presidential election scheduled for 23 October 2009 did not take place because only one candidate, Democratic Party leader Marian Lupu, was registered. He was nominated by the Alliance for European Integration.
Later, the procedure of electing the president was amended and now the election can take place even if only one candidate participates in the race.
