Moldova: Pro-Western alliance formed, communists - in opposition

Chisinau (Moldova.ORG) -- Moldovan politicians, after over a month of painful negotiations, have decided: on December 30, a pro-Western alliance has been formed and the communists are in opposition. The new (old) alliance brings together the Liberal Democrats with 32 seats (Vlad Filat), the Democratic Party with 15 seats (Marian Lupu/Dumitru Diacov), and the Liberals with 12 seats (Mihai Ghimpu). All together the alliance has 59 seats out of 101 seats in the parliament.

Democratic Party leader Marian Lupu will reportedly take over as (temporary) speaker of parliament (the alliance has enough votes for it).

Today's decision did not create the majority necessary to elect a president (61 votes are needed), but Lupu is going to be designated as the alliance candidate.
