Moldova, EU to launch visa liberalization, association talks
Moldova and the EU will start talks on the liberalization of the visa regime in 2010. An agreement on the matter has been reached during the 11th meeting of the Moldova-EU cooperation council. The sides also agreed to start negotiations on an association agreement.
The government's press service has said that the Moldova-EU cooperation council welcomed the Moldovan government's work to promote reforms, as well as its first steps towards democratic, social and economic reforms.
The participants in the meeting adopted a joint statement backing Moldova's efforts to get closer to the EU. The sides stated their intention to enter talks on the liberalization of the visa regime in 2010. To this end, the EU will send a special mission to Moldova at the beginning of the next year. The officials also agreed to start negotiations on an association agreement between Moldova and the EU.
In Brussels, Prime Minister Vlad Filat and the EU commissioner for external relations and the European neighbourhood policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner signed a memorandum which will allow the EU to advise Moldova on its path towards rapprochement with the EU. To this end, the EU will send a group of advisers to help the Moldovan authorities work out and implement steps aimed at European integration.
