Moldova awards military distinctions to Transnistrian war veterans
The Defence Ministry has awarded military distinctions to forty five Moldovan veterans of the 1992 Transnistrian war for special merits displayed in battles for the defence of Moldova's territorial integrity and independence. At the same time, 15 widows of fighters who died on battlefields were given financial assistance worth 500 lei each.
The actions were organised on the occasion of the Memory Day - day of commemorating those who died in the 1991-92 war for the defence of Moldova's territorial integrity and independence and the victims of this conflict, due to be marked on 2 March - the day when the war began. The Memory Day was established last week, under a parliament decision.
At a today's ceremony organised at the Chisinau-based Army's Central House for war veterans and widows, Defence Minister Vitalie Marinuta said that the commemoration of this event represents a tribute of gratitude and homage for the military heroism.
Reserve Colonel Victor Anton proposed to create a special exhibition in lyceums and gymnasiums with evidence on the tragic event, so as to immortalize the memory of the people who died in the war. At the same time, he made a proposal to unify all the veterans' organisations of this conflict, set up in Moldova, and establish a single organisation at the Defence Ministry.
Also today at Army's central House, the administration of the National Army's Museum inaugurated an exhibition of photos and documents titled, Razboiul de la Nistru (The Dniestre War), which includes 180 samples. The exhibition will be staged till 8 March.
About 29,000 people participated in the 1991-92 war, of whom 386 died and the other 284 remained invalids of the first and second degrees.
