Moldova authorities to close down UNIMEDIA portal?
The news portal UNIMEDIA announces that the authorities intend to liquidate the address of the web resource [www.unimedia.md], DECA-press communicates.
According to a declaration of New Media Group, the company that administers the portal, the Prosecution of Chisinau announced „MoldData” State Enterprise about the placement on 6 April 2009 on the site UNIMEDIA of some commentaries of visitors, that “defames Republic of Moldova, calls to violence and mass disorders” and represents “public calls to removal and change of the constitutional system in the Republic of Moldova through violence“.
As a reaction, on 26 June, „MoldData” warned the editorial staff of UNIMEDIA in a letter that “it will cancel the name of the site on the basis of the reasons issued to the prosecution”, in case it admits the publication of “illegal information” on www.unimedia.md.
UNIMEDIA considers that the governance is responsible for these actions. In this way, it menaces press freedom and it intends to intimidate visitors and the editorial staff of UNIMEDIA.
To reply to UNIMEDIA statement, the General Prosecution diffused a statement that specifies that “through the announcement of „MoldData”, the Prosecution of the capital asked just to insure the respect of the legislation in force, not to admit extremist or xenophobe calls – a demand that does not limit their rights to freedom of speech any way. Moreover, it does not intend to liquidate the site”.
