Moldova and Ukraine to secure the rights of minorities
The Republic of Moldova and Ukraine will be cooperating to ensure the national minorities’ rights as per the Agreement signed on Thursday night in Chisinau by Moldovan Deputy Premier, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Iurie Leanca and Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs Peter Poroshenko.
The two ministers discussed issues of border demarcation, recognition of each other’s property remaining in the territories of the two countries, and the Transnistria problem.
Peter Poroshenko stressed Ukraine regards its relations with Moldova as ones of a strategic importance. He said the parties had agreed to complete all preliminary accords and to embark on concrete work – “demarcation of the central [Transnistrian] portion of the Moldo-Ukrainian border… and we are doing all in our powers to launch this process already in 2009 with participation of foreign observers”.
As Infotag has already reported, the authorities of the self-proclaimed Transnistrian Moldovan Republic believe Moldova has no relation to the demarcation of the 470-km-long Transnistrian segment of the border with Ukraine, having a total length of 1,422 kilometers.
