Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, president of CoE's PA, visits Moldova

Parliament Speaker and acting President Mihai Ghimpu today met President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu. The two officials discussed the situation in Moldova, the development of the country's cooperation with the Council of Europe (CE) and ways to deepen relations with the CE member states, the parliament's media relations department has said.

Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu came on an official visit to Chisinau today following an invitation by President Mihai Ghimpu.

President Mihai Ghimpu thanked the Council of Europe for its constant support. At the same time, he voiced regret that, 15 years after accession to the CE, Moldova is still under the organization's monitoring. Ghimpu added that the parliament and the Moldovan present leadership will do their utmost to remove deficiencies in this direction.

We have always enjoyed much support on behalf of the Council of Europe in many fields, but now, when we should take an important decision in order to overcome the constitutional crisis, we need this support more than ever before, he said. Ghimpu specified that the commission for constitutional reform, set up under presidential decree, completed a draft new constitution which meets all the European norms and standards. The document is to be sent to the Venice Commission for assessment.

Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu stressed that Moldova is the third country, after Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, which he visits after his election as President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. PACE's goal is to help Moldova overcome the situation created after the parliament's failure to elect the president. The high European official said that the Council of Europe welcomes the democratization processes in Moldova. Mevlut Cavasoglu expressed hope that Moldova will settle the existing problems, and will meet the conditions necessary to successfully cover the European integration path - a bid fully backed by PACE.

In Chisinau, the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will have separate meetings with the leaders of all the parliamentary factions and other Moldovan officials.

On 25 March at 10:00, Mevlut Cavasoglu will give a speech in parliament. Afterwards, President Mihai Ghimpu and Mevlut Cavasoglu will hold a joint news conference.
