Member of Duma: Russia shall never let down Transnistria
Russia shall never let down Transnistria, Victor Malashenko, a member of the Russian State Duma [parliament] standing committee for CIS affairs and links with compatriots, stated over the local television.
The Russian parliamentarian said that because of the processes taking place in the Republic of Moldova and because of the political vector, which the Moldovan government has chosen, the interaction between Russia and Transnistria (separatist enclave in Eastern Moldova at the border with Ukraine) will only be getting stronger.
"I know that in the nearest future, along with the just reached agreement on the Russian Black Sea fleet [to remain at the Sebastopol navy base in Crimea, Ukraine, until 2043], a whole number of other serious decisions will follow soon. They will be aimed not only at consolidating the unity between Russia and Ukraine, but at the consolidation of our Slavic unity as a whole, with Transnistria being an inseparable part of this unity. These will be both political decisions and decisions on financial backing. As you know, we have already taken a decision to back Ukraine financially by lowering the gas rate for it [by approximately one-third], and certainly we will back Transnistria in this as well, though Russia does not have extra free money", said the Russian parliamentarian.
He also said that the State Duma is considering amendments to the Law on Compatriots, which are aimed at a more efficient support of citizens with Russian roots.
