Liberals urge EU to "take control of" Moldovan snap election
The Liberal Party (PL) of Moldova has said that the EU should take control of an early [parliamentary] election that may take place in Moldova if parliament fails once again to elect a president on 28 May. PL leader Mihai Ghimpu said this at a news conference on 26 May.
Ghimpu said the EU should make sure that the opposition has access to public television during the election campaign, that an electronic registrar of voters is elaborated and that the latest resolution on Moldova by the European Parliament is respected.
He also said that the EU could financially support the election. "The EU financed the 5 April parliamentary election by earmarking 3m euros," he said.
Ghimpu noted that the recommendations of the Venice Commission for the electoral threshold for parties to be cut from the current 6 per cent, the creation of electoral blocs to be allowed and the right to vote for Moldovans residing abroad to be secured should be implemented before an early parliamentary election.
