Liberal Party and Actiunea Europeana decide to unite

The national councils of the parliamentary Liberal Party and of the extra-parliamentary Actiunea Europeana [European Action] socio-political movement held their separate meetings last Saturday, and both bodies voted for unification of the two political organizations.

This week, the two will sign a merger agreement, and the final unification decision will be officially approved at a joint congress of the two organizations scheduled for March 13.

AE leader Veaceslav Untila said his Movement has decided to join the LP Political Program and to accept both the party name and symbols.

Untila said he does not want to be nominated as a candidate for whatever post at the forthcoming local elections [due in about June 2011], but hopes to see his name among the top 10 in the LP ticket at the next parliamentary election.

Liberal Party leader Mihai Ghimpu called the merger with the Actiunea Europeana as good onset of the unification of all Right forces in Moldova.

The LP Council has decided to nominate 100 young Liberals as candidates for various-level mayors and 1,000 young people - for Consilieri [Councilors, i.e. members of city, town or village Municipal Councils - regional legislatures] to thus carry out "a broad-most campaign of promoting the youth to local governance organs".

Infotag's dossier: Veaceslav Untila was the first Chairman of the Liberal Party. Later on, he made a substantial contribution to the creation and consolidation of another political force - the Moldova Noastra Alliance. Last year, however, a scandal over leadership broke out in the MNA, and Untila, together with the Alliance's Liberal wing, quitted the MNA, joined the Actiunea Europeana, and was elected its Chairman. However, the AE polled only 1.22% at the November 28, 2010 parliamentary elections. Mihai Ghimpu's Liberals won 9.96%, and received 12 mandates in the 101-member Parliament of Moldova.
