Kenya placed on high terrorism alert
Kenyan security officials were on high alert Tuesday after receiving reports Islamic extremists are preparing a terror assault, officials said.
Internal Security Minister George Saitoti told KTN-TV the threats were real and that every precaution was being taken to counter possible attacks, adding similar terrorism warnings have been issued to Kenya by U.S. intelligence officials.
One American person, who is involved in matters of terrorism intelligence, did allude that we've got to be very careful in eastern Africa, and Kenya was mentioned. So when I talk about that, I was not dreaming,
Saitoti told the Kenyan broadcaster.
Memories of the 1998 al-Qaida bombings at the U.S. embassies in Nairobi and Tanzania remain fresh in the minds of many Kenyans, KTN-TV said. About 224 people died in the blasts.
