Joseph Biden to express USA's support for democratic changes in Moldova
Vice President Joseph Biden will deliver a public speech in Chisinau on 11 March. The White House has said that the vice president will show the USA's support for the "continuous democratic and economic changes" in Moldova.
Tony Blinken, the national security adviser to Joe Biden, has told Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty that "the progress of this small country serves as a model for other Eastern European countries, wishing to carry out democratic reforms and get closer to the West". "The visit takes place in the context of Moldova's 20th anniversary of independence and against the background of difficult efforts to establish democracy and free market, which turned it into a source of inspiration in the region," Blinken said.
Blinken welcomed Moldova's decision to implement what he described as "difficult reforms" called for by the Alliance for European Integration. He noted that the USA "stands behind the Moldovan government, as they undertake these reforms".
Blinken added that Joe Biden will express the USA's support for a resolution of the Transnistrian conflict, which would "respect Moldova's sovereignty and territorial integrity", Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty reported.
Biden's visit to Moldova is the first by such a senior US official. It fits into a European tour, which also includes Finland and Russia.
