John Edwards running for White House
Kerry's former running mate seeking White House
Washington -- John Edwards, who sought the vice presidency by joining John Kerry's White House bid in 2004, said Thursday that he was running for the highest office in the United States.
Edwards, 53, announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination in New Orleans, becoming the latest to join the presidential race.
Edwards, an attorney and former US senator from the state of North Carolina, ran for president in 2004 before bowing out and eventually becoming Kerry's running mate.
Edwards said he would run a campaign that asked people to get involved and take action in politics, reviving his populist theme from the 2004 race.
"We want people in this campaign to actually take action now, not later, not after the next election," Edwards said.
Kerry, a senator from Massachusetts, has not announced whether he will make a second run for the White House and join a field that is expected to include New York Senator Hillary Clinton and Illinois Senator Barack Obama.
Clinton and Obama have said they will announce whether they intend to run in January.
