JCC will call on population from both banks of the Dniester to surrender their guns
The members of the Joint Control Commission (JCC) at the meeting of May 7 approved a draft appeal to the population from both banks of the Dniester to yield up the illegally kept arms and munitions that they appropriated during the armed conflict.
Ion Solonenco, the co-president of the JCC on behalf of Moldova, said that on the basis of the draft appeal, the Commission will work out a final version at the next meetings. The Commission also considered the necessity of working out a mechanism for using the financial resources provided by the OSCE mission, so as to motivate the population to voluntarily surrender the guns.
The Commission discussed certain issues related to the control regime in the Security Zone given that the military units of the Transdniestrian authorities are in the Security Zone without the approval of the JCC.
The meeting participants also discussed the necessity of resuming the military exercises of the joint peacekeeping forces halted in 2004. It was decided that the Military Commandment of the Peacekeeping Forces within two weeks will submit proposals for holding joint military exercises under a normal regime.
The Transdniestrian delegation proposed that the JCC members should carry out regular inspections at the peacekeepers’ posts.//REPORTER.MD
