Ireland holds Chairmanship of OSCE, Transnistria among priorities
By Valeriu Gonta/ Chisinau/ Moldova.ORG/ -- Ireland undertook the Chairmanship of OSCE Permanent Council. Eamon Gilmore was named the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office. The official is the Ireland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
“The profound political and economic transformations which we are witnessing today in various parts of the globe demonstrate once again the need for effective multilateralism, as do a number of ongoing regional conflicts and the growth in transnational security challenges,” said Eamon Gilmore during his first speech.
The Prime Minister stated that “the Chairmanship would maintain a balanced approach in addressing the politico-military, economic and environmental, and human dimensions of security,” according to OSCE’s official website.
Within his speech, the OSCE Chairperson has also addressed the conflict in Transnistria. Deputy Eamon Gilmore welcomed the resumption of the official “5+2 talks” in the Transnistrian settlement process. He has also assured the public of his support in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
Transnistria is a breakaway region of the Republic of Moldova which went apart after the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Internationally unrecognized entity proclaimed in Tiraspol on 2 September 1990, initially styled the Moldavian Transnistrian Soviet Socialist Republic. It is currently known as the Moldavian Transnistrian Republic.
