Iraqi Kurds protest Turkish vote
Thousands of Iraqi Kurds demonstrated Thursday against the Turkish parliament resolution authorizing cross-border military action.
Rallies took place in Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan, Dohuk, the city in the region closest to the border, and other cities and towns, The Times of London reported. Marchers carried banners with slogans like "Understanding each other is better than killing each other" and "The language of threat is no more."
The Turkish parliament voted by an overwhelming margin to give the country's leaders a one-year window for military action in Iraq. Turkey contends that the Kurdish Workers Party, or PKK, has been operating from bases in northern Iraq.
Also Thursday, Iraqi Kurdistan invited Turkey to negotiations on the PKK, Kuna, the Kuwaiti news agency, reported.
"The Kurdistan regional government considers that to have good relations with Turkey is a priority, and that the Turkish people are our friend and neighbor with whom we share many issues," a government statement said. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
