Iranian parliament approves bill on revising cooperation with IAEA
Tehran (dpa) - The Iranian parliament on Wednesday unanimously approved a bill on revising cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) following the United Nations Security Council sanctions, the Fars news agency reported.
The bill calls on the government to consider the necessity of revising cooperation with the IAEA "on the basis of national interests" and further accelerate the work on the peaceful nuclear projects.
However, the bill left the detailed evaluation of the issue to the National Security Council, which is in charge of the political aspect of the nuclear issue.
According to the Iranian constitution, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has the final say on all state affairs, including the nuclear issue, and could anytime overrule governmental and parliamentary decisions.
Observers consider the bill as a symbolic gesture rather than seriously binding the government as the nuclear issue is regarded in Iran as "state-matter", which means that it is decided at the highest level and in line with national interests. // © 2006 DPA
