Intl organizations recommend Moldova to improve electoral code
Representatives of the OSCE Mission to Moldova, the Council of Europe, the United Nations Development Program and the International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES) have recommended Moldova to amend its Electoral Code.
On Monday, the Moldovan Central Election Commission organized a conference at which the above-mentioned organizations indicated concrete drawbacks and irregularities that were revealed during the elections in 2009, such as e.g. lack of the pluralism of opinions in the mass media, restricted access to voting for Moldova citizens abroad, absence of electronic voter register, the using of administrative resource during election campaign, and some other.
The conference's foreign participants welcomed the initiatives and efforts by the Government and Parliament seeking to improve the legislation.
The Head of the OSCE Mission to Moldova, Ambassador Philip Remler, said the conference was useful for an analysis of the past elections' weak and strong sides, and for excluding mistakes in the future. He presumes this should be done without delay, for a possibility of an early election is still quite high.
Moldova's Acting President, Parliament Chairman Mihai Ghimpu called upon conference participants to pour light on the drawbacks of previous elections. He presumes efforts should be focused on preparing an electronic voter register, which will help eliminate many irregularities of the past.
