Ilie Ilascu says Valeriu Pasat could become president of Moldova

Romanian senator Ilie Ilascu says he had meetings with former defense minister Valeriu Pasat during the electoral campaign of March 2005 but did not discuss with him the staging of a coup or assassination of the PPCD leader Iurie Rosca.

Ilie Ilascu told a news conference in Chisinau on Friday that last year Valeriu Pasat asked him to take part in the electoral campaign as promoter on behalf of the democratic forces. He said that they did not speak about a coup or about Rosca’s assassination. Pasat wanted to make black PR against the Communist Party, according to Ilascu.

Ilascu also said that Valeriu Pasat would be prepared and could occupy the post of head of state in the next elections. He mentioned that Valeriu Pasat ”accepted to serve a sentence in jail because the population understands that he is the victim of the Communist regime".

The Cristian Democrat leader Iurie Rosca in February made a declaration asserting that Pasat tried to persuade Romanian senator Ilie Ilascu and other people to participate in the protest planned for 7 March 2005 where he was to be assassinated. // Reporter.MD
