Hungarians rally against their new consitution
Edited by Valeriu Gonta / Moldova.org/ -- Tens of thousands of Hungarians are protesting against their new constitution, which was adopted at the beginning of 2012. Political parties, civil organizations and opposition groups joined the crowd to rally against the decision of the Prime Minister Viktor Orban, the New York Times informs.
According to the on-line edition of the newspaper, the rally was a previously unseen show of unity among the political and civil groups in Hungary.
“We want the rule of law back and we want the republic back,” told Petr Konya, the leader of the Hungarian Solidarity Movement, to the New York Times. “Viktor Orban forgot that the power belongs to the people, it belongs to us, and we will get it back from them,” she added.
The European Union and the United States of America asked for the new law to be withdrawn. According to EUobserver, the former US diplomat to Budapest, Mark Palmer told a local newspaper that “Hungary's ejection from the European Union is now no longer unthinkable.”
Hungary joined the European Union on January 1, 2004.
