Greek demonstrators tried to storm the Parliament

Mariana Puzderi/ Chișinău / Moldova.ORG/ -- Clashes of protesters with the police occurred in the Greek capital, Athens, after the new cabinet, headed by Prime Minister George Papandreou, won the confidence vote in parliament in the night of June 22 .

Thousands of protesters, chanting anti-government slogans, gathered in the city's main Syntagma Square.

About 200 protesters began throwing stones into the guards and tried to break through to the Parliament building, after which the police dispersed them with tear gas, stun grenades and batons.

The confidence vote in the new Cabinet, for which voted 155 deputies from the pro-government Socialist Party, and 143 voted against, means carrying out stringent budget cuts.

The package of austerity measures, proposed by the new government of Greece, would entail a sharp increase in taxes, reductions in wages and social benefits.

Decisions on budget cuts of 28 billion euros by 2015 is a prerequisite for the next credit tranche for Greece of 12 billion euros. This amount is part of the financial assistance of 110 billion euros, provided by the EU and the IMF.
