Gordon: US urges Moldova to conduct fair and transparent election

"A country that has been a concern recently is Moldova, where repeat parliamentary elections will take place after the parliament failed to elect a president. We will urge the Government of Moldova to conduct the elections in a fair and transparent manner, seriously addressing concerns raised about the conduct of the previous parliamentary elections, including accurate voter lists and a free and independent media. This would increase confidence in Moldova’s democratic institutions and demonstrate that Moldova remains on a path of reform and democratic development."

This is an excerpt from Philip H. Gordon's statement before the Subcommittee on Europe of the House Foreign Affairs Committee held in the U.S. Congress on June 16, 2009.

The hearing titled "Strengthening the Transatlantic Alliance: An Overview of the Obama Administration's Policies in Europe" was chaired by the Subcommittee chairman Robert Wexler (D-FL). Philip Gordon, who is Assistant Secretary for Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, was the main witness at this hearing.

Regarding the Transnistrian conflict, Philip Gordon said that the United States “will continue to work for a negotiated settlement of the separatist conflict in the Transnistria region that provides for a whole and democratic Moldova and the withdrawal of Russian forces.”
