Gorbachev warns of nuclear holocaust
Mikhail Gorbachev said in a speech in Massachusetts arms control measures could collapse if Moscow and Washington fail to reach a deal on missile defense.
Gorbachev spoke at a nuclear arms control conference at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.
He said the lack of progress in the conflict over U.S. plans to deploy a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe could have dire consequences on the post-Cold War relationship between the United States and Russia, the Moscow Times said Thursday.
"If the processes in the nuclear sphere continue as they are now, 100 years from now humankind will be no more," he said.
The Russian foreign minister Sergie Lavrov said in Moscow Washington's reluctance to allow Russian monitors to observe the Eastern European missile shield signaled Washington was suffering from "the syndrome of a victor" from the Cold War.
Lavrov also accused the United States of undercutting the international community by shunning the United Nations.
