Candidates for the 2008 GOP presidential nomination are trying to piece together support from the party's constituent groups, The New York Times said Sunday.

With evangelical voters and the party’s other important constituencies still undecided, no clear winner has emerged, the newspaper said.

The campaign for former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is betting on early primary victories to propel him to the nomination, the Times said.

Former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee, meantime, is betting on a chaotic race with no clear front-runner, and former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s campaign is hoping for big wins during the glut of primaries on Feb. 5, the newspaper said.

The campaign of Sen. John McCain of Arizona is short on cash and banking on a win in the New Hampshire primary, where McCain was a winner in 2000.  // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
