Ghimpu: Transnistrian conflict settlement, impossible without Russian troops withdrawal
Unconditional withdrawal of Russian troops and removal of Russian ammunition from Transnistria to be followed by the region's demilitarization and democratization - such are the necessary prerequisites for a viable solution of the Transnistria problem on the basis of respect for the Republic of Moldova's sovereignty and territorial integrity, Moldova's Acting President, Parliament Chairman Mihai Ghimpu stated in the Parliament of Romania today.
He said Moldova stands for resuming the 5+2 negotiations, for this format has received international recognition as one good for achieving a lasting settlement of the conflict. He stressed the settlement dragging under various invented pretexts may only have a negative influence on peace and security in the region.
"Restoration of relations with Romania is one of the main objectives of the Alliance for European Integration ever since its institution. In shorter than 6 months from AEI's coming into power, the Moldo-Romanian relations have not simply got back onto normal track but have started developing positively", Ghimpu said.
He reaffirmed that accession to the European Union is Moldova's strategic objective.
