The Christian Democratic Popular Party (CDPP) headed by Deputy Prime Minister Iurie Rosca has demanded a complete recount of ballots cast in the 29 July early parliamentary election. The election was called after MPs that made it to parliament on 5 April failed to elect the president.

On August, 3, the PPCD lodged an inquiry with the Constitutional Court saying that too many violations and irregularities were registered during the recent election and that they could influence the outcome of the polls. In particular, the Christian Democrats said that power outages were reported at some polling stations during the vote counting, observers had limited access to polling stations, there were violations during voting by means of mobile ballot-boxes and too many ballot papers were announced null and void. By law, only the Constitutional Court is due to take a decision concerning a complete ballot recount. Such decisions were taken in 2001 and after the 5 April parliamentary election. Differences in both cases were hundredths of a per cent, and they could not influence the election outcome or the distribution of parliamentary mandates. At the 29 July early parliamentary election, the Communist Party was supported by 706,732 voters (44.69 per cent). It was followed by the Liberal Democratic Party with 262,028 votes (16.57 per cent), the Liberal Party with 232,108 votes (14.68 per cent), the Democratic Party with 198,278 votes (12.54 per cent) and the Our Moldova Alliance with 116,194 votes (7.35 per cent). The CDPP was backed only by 30,236 voters (1.91 per cent) and failed to cross the 5-per-cent election threshold.

The Central Electoral Commission has finally counted all the votes and it was due to submit all electoral documents to the Constitutional Court on Tuesday 4 August. So, now it is up to the Constitutional Court to decide on a vote recount or approve the election results and distribute parliamentary mandates.
