Former Indian lawmaker gets death sentence
An Indian court has sentenced a former Parliament member to death and his wife to a life term in the 1994 killing of a state official by a mob, it was reported.
Besides Anand Mohan, the court in the eastern state of Bihar Wednesday also gave death sentences to two other former politicians in the killing of Krishnaiyah, who was a district magistrate in the state, the BBC reported.
Mohan served in India’s Parliament after being elected in 1996. His wife, who received a life sentence, also is a former lawmaker.
The victim, who was traveling in his official vehicle, was stopped by a mob taking part in a funeral procession for a local politician and mafia leader, who had been killed by police.
Local media reports said Krishnaiyah was dragged out, badly beaten and then shot to death apparently to avenge the killing of the mafia leader. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
