Five U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq blast
The U.S. military said a suicide truck bomber in Mosul, Iraq, killed five U.S. soldiers, an Iraqi soldier and two Iraqi policemen.
The Iraqi Interior Ministry said the bomber detonated his explosives inside the outer security barrier of the Iraqi National Police headquarters, injuring 60 people in addition to those killed, CNN reported Friday.
One U.S. soldier was among the wounded, the U.S. military said. It said two people suspected of being involved in planning the attack were detained.
The BBC reported the bombing marked the largest number of U.S. deaths in a single incident for months.
Iraqi Gen. Hassan Karim, commander of Nineveh operations for the Iraqi army, said U.S. and Iraqi forces are planning to pull out of Mosul and leave security in the hands of Iraqi police but the police force isn't ready for the move, CNN reported.
We need to bring the police to the required level. The deadline is the end of July and it's not enough time to prepare the police,
he said. (That) means we'll need U.S. forces to stay in Mosul.
