Filat optimistic new governing coalition shall be in place before December 28
Prime Minister Vladimir Filat, who heads the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova, says he is convinced he will be able to form a governing coalition by December 28, which date is the 30-day deadline for the new Parliament to hold its first plenary meeting.
On Friday, the LDPM leaders held their first negotiation session with the Liberals, after which Filat stated to the press he did not put forth any proposals to them.
"It was just a general, broad discussion of things, not a negotiation on shaping a coalition. We analyzed the election returns and spoke about how we are going to govern the republic. More concrete negotiations will take place next week", said Vladimir Filat.
He also announced an intention to contact the Communist Party leadership to appoint a meeting - at the LDPM or MCP headquarters, or in a neutral territory.
Mihai Ghimpu added here that "Moldova has no option but the Alliance for European Integration, and citizens have voted for it. A broad coalition with the Communists is just impossible because this would mean their comeback into power. It is essential to reconstruct the AEI with the 59 parliamentary mandates available, after which we will discuss the 2 votes we miss for electing President.
In his words, the Parliament may well convene for its first meeting even before the deadline of December 28 if certainly an alliance is formed, and "then we will convene and discuss the 2011 State Budget".
