Ex-FBI agent convicted of conspiracy

A former FBI agent was found guilty Wednesday of plotting to storm and rob an alleged drug house in Southern California armed with weapons.

The Orange County (Calif.) Register reported that Vo-Duong Tran of New Orleans was convicted of conspiracy, interstate travel with intent to commit a crime of violence with a firearm, possession of a firearm and possession of a machine gun.

Tran's co-defendant, Yu Sung Park, is a former law enforcement official in Illinois. He was also was convicted of the charges.

The newspaper said Tran worked as a federal law enforcement officer in Chicago from 1992 to 2003. He was reportedly fired after admitting that he attempted to bribe a Vietnamese official while on a personal trip to Vietnam.

"It's disappointing that he's a former agent and he turned to this kind of conduct,'' said Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Keenan said after the verdict.

Tran had brought five firearms with him, including a machine gun and a rifle equipped with a silencer, to commit the robbery in Fountain Valley, Calif.

The men each face a maximum sentence of 70 years in prison. Their sentencing is tentatively scheduled for June 15.
