Ex-Communist speaker elected leader of opposition party in Moldova
Marian Lupu has been elected leader of the opposition Democratic Party with a majority of votes at a congress held by the party on 19 July.
Lupu replaced Dumitru Diacov [also a former speaker of the Moldovan parliament in 1998-2001] who became honourable president of the Democratic Party.
Ex-speaker Marian Lupu quit the ruling Communist Party in June 2009 and he is the first on the Democrat Party's list of candidates for the 29 July early election, ProTV added.
Moldova is to hold an early poll after MPs elected on 5 April failed to elect the president. At the 5 April election, the Democratic Party gained 2.97 per cent of the votes and failed to enter parliament. However, the party is expected to cross the 5-per-cent election threshold on 29 July after it was joined by Lupu.
