European Union has a Special Representative in Kosovo
The Council of the European Union appointed today Samuel Zbogar as EU Special Representative in Kosovo. According to a press release, Mr. Zbogar is to be double-hatted as head of the EU office in Kosovo, a position to which he was designated on December 21, 2011. This will significantly reinforce the EU presence in Kosovo.
The Special Representative will have to promote a peaceful, stable, democratic and multi-ethnic Kosovo. His mission is to contribute to the regional stability and co-operation in the Western Balkans zone. He will also have to advice the European Union in the political process, making sure the EU has a coherent and effective presence in Kosovo.
Mrs. Catherine Ashton, the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy said: “I look forward to working closely with Samuel Zbogar, whose deep knowledge of the region and extensive diplomatic experience make him an excellent choice for this vital role. The appointment of Mr. Zbogar and the double-hatting as head of the EU office in Kosovo is a clear sign of the importance the EU is giving to the European future
of the region."
Samuel Zbogar worked as the Minister for Foreign Affairs in Slovenia. He also has 24 years of experience in strategic locations such as Washington D.C, the UN in New York City and China. Mr. Zbogar will take office on 1 February 2012 and his mandate will run until June 30, 2013.
