European Parliament president on official visit to Moldova

The present stage of Moldova-EU relations as well as their development prospects will be the focus of a meeting between Moldovan acting President Mihai Ghimpu and European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek, who is on an official visit to Chisinau, the presidential press service has said.

After the EU official arrived at the Chisinau International Airport on the morning, Mihai Ghimpu and Jerzy Buzek told journalists that the outcome of the discussions would be made public at a news conference.

Before his visit to Chisinau, the European official said he was glad to visit Moldova to convey a message of solidarity and support. "In just one year the country has made impressive progress on its European path. I want to encourage Moldova to firmly stick to it," Jerzy Buzek said.

"Through my visit I aim to show the EU's continued support for Moldova and its people at this crucial point in time and our full endorsement of the European reform agenda, which Moldova has been actively pursuing during the last year. I want to encourage political stability in the country, support the unity among its political leaders and encourage them to finally find a solution to the constitutional stalemate and the institutional deadlock. Moldova has the potential to become a prosperous and modern nation where young people can fulfil their dreams in their home country and not only pursuing their fortune abroad," the President of the European Parliament said before the visit.

In Chisinau, Jerzy Buzek will meet the leaders of the parties that made it to the parliament after the 28 November early polls.
