European liberals call on EU, OSCE to monitor election in Moldova
The Alliance of Liberal Democrats from the European Parliament has appealed to the European Union and the OSCE to delegate observers for the 29 July early parliamentary elections in Moldova to guarantee their legality and correctness.
The appeal, signed by Alliance leader Graham Watson, said that the international reputation of Moldova suffered considerably last April following the statements about election rigging and about the falsified results of opinion polls, and the Communist authorities' subsequent reaction to protesting by the opposition.
The document said the European Parliament was right to have condemned Chisinau's aggressiveness and unilateral actions against Romania and its citizens.
The new European Parliament has provided for a possibility to act resolutely and to demonstrate adherence to the commitment to support human rights and superiority of law in countries that are next-door neighbors to the European Union.
The Alliance of Liberal Democrats from the European Parliament collaborates with the Moldova Noastra Alliance (AMN). On Monday, the AMN distributed a press release, expressing gratitude to the European organization for its active stance and voicing hope the stance will be backed by all the rest political groups in Europe.
