EU to implement new pilot project at Moldovan-Ukrainian border

The European Union Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine (EUBAM) has planned to create two model Moldovan-Ukrainian border checkpoints in 2010. The customs checkpoints Todora-Starokazachye and Otaci-Moghiliov Podilskii were chosen as model borer checkpoints.

The project will focus on daily analysis of operations at the customs checkpoints in order to decrease and liquidate corruption at the border. To this end, an opinion poll will be conducted among drivers and passengers who cross the state border, in order to get a clear vision of the way the Customs Service and the Border Guard Services fulfil their duties.

The director-general of the Customs Service, Tudor Balitchi, said that the project's goal is to maintain the execution discipline and observe the duties by customs employees and border guards by displaying a respectful behaviour towards the citizens who cross the state border. Balitchi stressed that the EUBAM mission's activity boosted the Customs Service's administrative capacities, especially tin terms of efficient customs control.

The pilot project's activities will be monitored by a working group made up of customs employees and border guards assisted by employees of Field Offices and advisers of the EUBAM Mission.
