EU to halt its enlargement process as of next year?

Map of the European Union

The European Union enlargement process will stop as of 2013. According to the Azeri news website ABC, which quotes the chairman of the Polish Senate Bogdan Borusewicz, the European dream of Ukraine, Turkey, Georgia and Serbia won’t become true.

The official said that after Croatia’s entry in the European Union in 2013 will close the doors to new members for a long time.

"Croatia joined the European Union at the last moment, and its entry is followed by a long pause in EU enlargement that is linked with the current unfavorable economic environment. At the same time Poland actively supports the accession of new states of south-east Europe to the Union," Mr. Borusewicz said.

According to the source, only the Republic of Moldova has a chance to become a new member of the European community. However, Moldova will have to give up its sovereignty by joining Romania which is already part of the EU.

The European Union currently has 27 member states, but as of 2013 Croatia will join the community, as well.
