EU to decide on financial assistance for Moldova in June
The European Union will take a decision on macro-financial assistance to Moldova not earlier than in June, Moldovan Deputy Premier, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Iurie Leanca said.
During the Chisinau meeting of the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Cooperation Committee (EMP) on Tuesday, Iurie Leanca requested the European parliamentarians to possibly accelerate the help provision.
European parliamentarian Cristian Busoi (Romania) said there is no doubt that the European Union will provide financial assistance to Moldova. But after the Lisbon Treaty had come into effect last December 1, new rules of the game appeared. Due to this, the provision of means will take a bit longer than initially expected.
Dirk Schuebel, Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Moldova, said that a meeting will be held in Brussels on March 24 on attracting extra funding for Moldova. This forum will be attended by various countries and organizations.
The European parliamentarians expressed readiness to underpin the Republic of Moldova politically in visa regime liberalization, if technical reforms here are implemented successfully. They welcomed the new Moldovan authorities’ achievements in the European integration field, and thanked the [previous] Government of Premier Zinaida Grechanaya for its making “first steps towards Europe”.
EMP Co-Chairperson Monica Macovei (Romania) said, “You may count on our support at realization of the reforms. But do not forget the reforms are for people, not for the sake of joining the European Union. The integration will take place later in a natural way”.
