EU official: Moldova is a sovereign state; Russia cannot decide for Moldova

Head of EU Delegation to Moldova, Dirk Schuebel

The Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova Dirk Schuebel said that the Republic of Moldova is a sovereign state and can decide itself the future it wants.

“I believe that the Russian administration will let Moldova to choose itself the path wants to head,” said Dirk Schuebel for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. “Moldova is a sovereign country. It will decide by itself what route it should have.”

Although the Transnistrian conflict is still unsolved, the European official is more optimistic regarding the settlement of the issue.

“The new leadership [in Tiraspol] is more communicative and open for a dialogue. The contacts have been multiplied during the past year,” Dirk Schuebel explained.

The official said that the “5+2” talks have significantly improved and become “a serious dialogue” as he participated in most of the negotiations this year since they were resumed. He appreciated Russia’s involvement in the negotiation format “carrying an important input in the conflict management.”

The European Union is part of the “5+2” negotiation format as an observer together with the United States of America.
