Election runners state 23.3 million lei spent for elections
Since the election campaign onset last February 4, runners for the Moldovan Parliament have, so far, spent 23.3 million lei in the campaigning, judging by the financial statements submitted to the Central Election Commission by 16 election contenders of the 21 that were available at the campaign beginning. Last week, the Party “Pentru Neam şi Tara” [“For People and Country”], the “Alianţa Verde” [Green Alliance] Ecological Party, and this week – independent candidate Valentina Cusnir stated they were quitting the election race in favor of other forces.
That was the third scheduled financial statement each candidate, be this a party or an independent, were supposed to present to the CEC. And the final, 4th statement must be submitted next week to cover the closing days of the election campaign. However, stated sums will hardly undergo radical changes because most competitors prefer to pay for campaign commodities and services in advance.
So far, the largest expenditures have been stated by the ruling Moldovan Communist Party – 5.3 million lei, followed by the Social Democratic Party – 3.8 million lei, the Liberal Democratic Party 3.7 million lei, the Moldova Noastra Alliance 3.4 million lei, the Acţiunea Europeană [European Action] socio-political movement 2 million lei, the Democratic Party – slightly under 2 million lei, and the Liberal Party 1.3 million lei.
By law, each political party may invest maximum 12 million lei in campaigning, and an independent candidate – 500 thousand lei.
