Dirk Schuebel hopes Merkel-Sarkozy-Medvedev meeting will pour more light on Transnistria problem

Dirk Schuebel, Head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Moldova, hopes that the tripartite meeting the leaders of Germany, France and Russia Angela Merkel, Nicolas Sarkozy and Dmitry Medvedev held in Deauville-sur-Mer (France) on Tuesday should pour more light on the Transnistria problem and should promote a better understanding of its solution possibilities.

Dirk Schuebel told a news conference here that the meeting would help restart negotiations on Transnistrian conflict settlement in the format of 5+2.

Asked by your Infotag correspondent if the three leaders could achieve a principal decision on upgrading the European Union's status in the 5+2 format and on making EU a mediator to the Transnistria negotiations, the diplomat replied that a decision of such importance by only three countries, of which only two are EU members, was out of the question.

Schuebel expressed hope, however, that the meeting would be useful for acceleration of the conflict settlement, particularly bearing in mind that both Germany and France have good relations with Russia.

Upon the whole, the diplomat voiced satisfaction about the progress of consultations on the Transnistrian conflict settlement, and about the latest trends of Chisinau-Tiraspol rapprochement, namely the resumption of a passenger train circulation via Tiraspol, good perspectives of restarting cargo train traffic via the Transnistrian region, negotiations on restoring telephone communication between the two Dniester banks, etc.

Journalists asked Dirk Schuebel to comment the recent statement by Moldovan Communist Party leader Vladimir Voronin - that the current Moldovan authorities, with their actions, are only promoting recognition of Transnistria's independence, and Mr. Schuebel disagreed with that.

"I have very friendly relations with Vladimir Voronin, and I agree with many of his points, but here I can't agree. The progress, which has been achieved in realization of measures of trust between the two Dniester banks, leads to normalization of relations, and it is definitely positive - primarily for citizens themselves", said Dirk Schuebel.
