Democrat leader says local polls's outcome might speed up presidential election
The honorary chairman of the coalition partner Democratic Party (PD), Dumitru Diacov, has said that the local polls might contribute to the election of the head of state. Asked by MODLPRES to comment on the outcome of the 19 June mayoral election, he said: "I hope everybody understands that new elections will not be favourable for the country."
"There is no need to hold several polls in a row, since two or three mandates only can change the balance of power," Diacov said. "If we hold talks, we might elect the president by the end of the year already," he added.
Asked about the future cooperation in the administration of Chisinau municipality, in which the opposition Communists holds a majority in the municipal council whereas the mayor is a Liberal, Diacov said that the PD is not against a planned recount of votes cast for the Chisinau municipal council. Yet, he added that "the political actors should be less suspicious towards each other".
Diacov also said that the local polls were successful for the Democratic Party and for the entire ruling Alliance for the European Integration. "We doubled the number of local councillors and we have over 230 elected mayors," Diacov told MOLDPRES.
