Pakistan’s election commission has set an October date for national and provincial assembly lawmakers, to hold a presidential election.

In Pakistan, the president is elected not by popular vote, but through a ballot in the assemblies.

The announcement of an Oct. 6 election date came as the Pakistani Supreme Court was hearing a number of challenges questioning the eligibility of Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf to seek a second term while remaining the country’s military chief.

Pakistan’s GEO TV said the date was approved by Chief Election Commissioner Qazi Muhammad Farooque. Those wishing to contest have until next Thursday to file nomination papers.

Musharraf faces a host of problems, from escalating militant and fundamentalist violence to seeing his popularity plummet. He came to power in 1999 after a bloodless military coup and since then has kept both his presidential and military titles, but his lawyer said this week he will give up his military title if re-elected.

He is also under pressure from Islamic groups for supporting the United States in its anti-terror campaign, while Western countries want him to do more to put down the Taliban and al-Qaida-supported violence in areas bordering Afghanistan. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
