Conflict Zones such as Transnistrian or occupied regions of Georgia are indispensable for the security services of Russia as a springboard for conducting intelligence activities and for implementation of various special operations, including subversive acts. That was a comment made by president of "the Club of Experts" and former Minister of Security of the Abkhazian Autonomous Republic General Levan Kiknadze on the Ukraine-Russia "spy scandal".

He highlighted the fact that those Russian FSB officers (detained in Ukraine) are members of the Task Force of Russian troops of Transnistrian region of Moldova is a vivid example of how Russia's security services use the conflict region to achieve their goals.

Kiknadze noted that in practice of counter-intelligence of Abkhazian Autonomous Republic there was a fact of recruiting a citizen of Georgia, who was lured by deception into the uncontrolled territory of Abkhazia as a result of an operation planned by the FSB. "Intelligence-operational activities of the security services of Russia in the post-Soviet republics today is not a secret for anybody, - the expert said, - It is easy to imagine how active they are in Ukraine and Georgia".

The president of "the Club of Experts" also noted that throughout the period of the conflict in Abkhazia, Georgian intelligence were constantly registering not only influence of Russian security services on processes among the separatists, but also their work to foil search for ways to resolve conflicts, as well as violation of agreements reached between the parties and so on. At that Levan Kiknadze highlighted destructive actions of security services of Russia against Georgian population of Abkhazia and active recruiting work conducted by them.

We should remind that on January 2nd Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced about an incident that happened on January 27th in the Odessa region when five officers of the FSB of Russia who were trying to get a secret military information, were exposed. As chairman of the SBU Valentin Nalyvaychenko stated at a press conference in Kiev that a regular officer of Russian security services was detained at the time when he was getting state secrets from Ukrainian citizen and giving him 2 thousand dollars. At the same time three other officers of the FSB were in the other car and were covering him. They were officers of united Russian troops (OGRV) in Transnistria. All this was watched from afar by their leader - lieutenant colonel and chief of military counter-intelligence of the FSB of the united Russian troops (OGRV) and who disappeared from the place of the incident.

Nalyvaychenko noted that all detained Russian spies entered Ukraine from Transnistria. It was established that a few months ago they seized a citizen of Ukraine on the territory of Transnistria, took him to a military base and by threatening lives and health of his and his family compelled him to cooperate.

It should be noted that centre of public relations of the FSB of Russia confirmed a fact of detention of Russian intelligence officer in Ukraine, but announced about response actions of Russia, supposedly dictated by "the increased recruiting activity of security services of Ukraine in connection with Russian citizens."
