Communist representative gives up mandate in Chisinau municipal council
Anatolie Tofan, who has made it to the Chisinau municipal Council on the ticket of the opposition Party of Communists (PCRM), announced that he is waiving his mandate in order not to tarnish the PCRM's image. Tofan's decision comes short after representatives of a ruling party had stated that he would have killed a minor.
In a press statement, Tofan noted that both he and the PCRM had been subjected to a "dirty attack aimed at intoxicating the public opinion and tarnishing the image of the PCRM team and of its candidate for the post of Chisinau mayor".
"At the same time, I will take the people and relevant state bodies to justice for having seriously damaged my honour and dignity and for having seriously violated the legislation," Tofan said in his statement.
Last week, the junior coalition partner Liberal Party unveiled a file concerning Tofan's conviction to 10 years in a prison for minors for murdering a 12-year-old girl in 1988.
