Commemorative stone of monument to victims of Soviet occupation unveiled in Chisinau
The commemorative stone of a monument to the victims of the Soviet occupation and of the totalitarian communist regime was unveiled and blessed in the Chisinau-based National Assembly Square today. Attending the ceremony were representatives of the Bessarabian and Moldovan orthodox churches, a group of priests of the church Sfînta Teodora din Sihla and priest Constantin of a Paris-based Romanian orthodox church.
"We condemn the crimes of the communist regime. The monuments dedicated to this regime should be demolished and the hammer-and-sickle symbol, under which hundreds and thousands of people were killed, should be outlawed," Moldovan acting President and Parliament Speaker Mihai Ghimpu said.
The chairman of the commission in charge of assessing the deeds of the totalitarian communist regime, Gheorghe Cojocaru, thanked the president for the initiative to set the commemorative stone and to outlaw the symbols of communism.
The editor in chief of the newspaper Literatura si Arta, poet Nicolae Dabija, backed the acting president, noting that the symbols and the communist regime should be outlawed.
On 28 June Moldova marks the day of Soviet occupation and of commemoration of the victims of the totalitarian communist regime in line with a presidential decree signed on 24 June 2010.
