Clampdown on al-Qaida in Iraq kills seven
U.S.-led raids Thursday on suspected al-Qaida cells southwest of Baghdad resulted in the deaths of seven insurgents and arrest of eight other people.
The U.S. military said in a statement the raids were in Mahmoudiya and in Samara, north of the capital, CNN reported.
It also reported two al-Qaida suspects were arrested Wednesday in the northern city of Kirkuk, Kuwait's KUNA news agency reported.
The military also confirmed in a statement Thursday a senior al-Qaida leader had been killed in an Aug. 31 raid in a town north of Baghdad. A statement said car bomb specialist Yaqoub Al-Masri and an aide were killed in a firefight with U.S. forces.
Masri was the chief suspect in the series of bombings this year in the Baghdad suburb of Sadr City that killed 181 civilians and injured 247 others, KUNA said.
There was no explanation as to why it took three weeks to confirm Masri's identity. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
