Campaign contributors reaching toward cap
More than 100 campaign contributors are nearing the $108,200 limit on how much they can pump into the 2008 election.
With a year still to go before the presidential election, the non-partisan Center for Responsive Politics found that 113 people have donated at least two-thirds of the amount they can give to all federal candidates, political parties and political action committees.
Among those shoveling out campaign cash: billionaire businessman Kirk Kerkorian, San Diego Chargers owner Alex Spanos, San Francisco newspaper heiress Nan McEvoy and shopping-mall developer Mel Simon, USA Today reported on Tuesday.
In the 2004 presidential election, 372 donors hit the campaign contributing limit, which was $95,000.
At that time, about 60 percent went to Republicans and nearly 40 percent to Democrats. This cycle, however, nearly 90 percent is going to Democrats. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
