Bush to visit Middle East
The White House announced President George Bush plans to start his last year in office with a trip to the Middle East in January.
The visit would mark Bush's second trip to the region as president, discounting three trips taken to meet with Iraqi officials, The Washington Post reported Wednesday.
The administration did not offer any further details on Bush's plans for the trip, but the Post said the sojourn is likely to include his first visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories as president. The move could signal the president's intention to beef up his role in creating a peace settlement between Israel and the Palestinians.
Bush previously traveled to the Middle East in 2003 to meet with allies in Egypt and attend a three-way summit in Jordan with then-Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and then-Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, who is now president of the Palestinian Authority.
Bush also visited Israel in 1998 while serving as governor of Texas. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
