Bush calls service members for holiday
President George Bush took time out from his family Thanksgiving celebration in Maryland Thursday to call U.S. service members overseas.
The president sent a message of "happy thanks" to service members in Iraq, Afghanistan and at sea, White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said, and asked for God to bless them.
"It's a great sacrifice to be away from your children and if it wasn't a noble cause he would not ask them to do it," she said. "He knows that it's tough work but it's necessary work and he is proud of them."
Perino said Bush told them: "When you tell your parents you've been talking with the president, half of them will think you're fibbing, but you can tell them its true."
Bush spent the holiday at Camp David, Md., with first lady Laura Bush, twins Barbara and Jenna -- who turn 26 in a few days -- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Jenna's fiance Henry Hager and his family. // Copyright 2007 by United Press International
